RockSteady 2.1 - A nice volume equalizer (compressor)

Staff review

Save yourself from the varying volumes of your MP3 collection.

Volume EQ to allow you to listen to your whole collection without massive jumps in volume. Handy when making mix tapes from your MP3 collection, so you don't have to constantly change levels.

Webcaster's Dream - This plugin with SqrSoft output plugin Ver 1.72 that is now at this url: http://www.mpex.net/en/software/download/crossfading.html solved all of my broadcasting problems. There is a newer version (1.75) available in the Winamp Plugins listing, but it is really buggy. SqrSoft 1.72 allows for two DSP plugins to be used at the same time which is what I needed to do to get my broadcast to sound right. This is how I did it: First, go to the site above and get 1.72 and install it. Then get the RockSteady 2.1 plugin and install it. Open Winamp and go to preferences. Go to DSP and select the RockSteady plugin. Now go to Output and select the SqrSoft 1.72 plugin. Click configure and select the DSP tab. Select your ShoutCast/OddCast broadcasting plugin and run it from there. Click configure to bring up the plugin to set it up and you're good to go! With this setup, what you end up with is a broadcast that crossfades beautifully and with the RockSteady plugin working also, your listeners won't have to jump at the volume every time the song changes! I used the default settings on both plugins and it worked great. A note about Windows XP: Because of the way XP uses memory, you may have to add some to the PC to keep Winamp from crashing. I had identical setups in both servers, one XP SP2, the other 2000 Pro SP4 with Winamp 5.24 (current 5.51). XP gave me problems until I added memory. I highly recommend this plugin. Better than AudioStocker? - I dont think so. Yes, RockSteady has mor options, but when I try to play for example U2 - Mothers Of The Disappeard wich has wery silent beginning AudioStocker wins. - March 29, 2006 by or hor

Best Leveller Out There - Very good leveller. No lags in levelling like in other plugins, this one will actually give very fine volume control without overly sacrificing the dynamic of the original waveform. Best of all it doesn't bang your speakers when switching from a soft track to a loud track. Excellent. - March 10, 2006 by David H

Its really superbbbbb - Yes it is amazing before that i cant get the clear sound output . my other audio players are control the winamp audio. But this is working amazingly ... - March 4, 2006 by j anand

Awesome awesome awesome - I have a mix of classical and rock in my playlist, and I always used to have to crank up the music to hear classical because it's recorded at a lower level, only to jump out of my seat when the song was over because it switched to a loud guitar riff. This works perfectly at evening the levels and is customizable so you can still hear subtleties in dynamics (fadeouts, quiet sections). - August 22, 2005 by Alex Rabina

Use This - trieds alot of other auto gain plug ins but this is the business! download it now!!!! - February 18, 2005 by Robert Barnes

Fantastic - Fantastic plugin !!!! Recomended !!!!! - February 16, 2005 by Wilson Freitas

Absolutely fantastic - As others have said, this completely takes the guesswork out of setting levels, and we can't tell the difference between the original and normalized version, other than the volume. Kudos! - January 29, 2005 by Graham Boyes

A Major Help in Our Audio Chain! - RockSteady 2.1 is a major help for our audio chain. While we locally encode our songs into our Winamp automation with CoolEdit PRO, there are some songs out there that are very very high or very low. RockSteady takes all of the "guess work" and provides consistantly "Steady" volume levels from the computer to our board, which is connected to our Optimod 8100A. RockSteady makes for an excellent AGC unit, as a pre-processor in the "soft-compression" mode. If you don't believe me, listen to it for yourself, live on WXRB-FM & Internet at wxrbfm.com! You'll be pleasantly surprised! Cheers, Jay P. Quentin III CE/WXRB-FM & SuperStation WXRB (Internet) - September 25, 2004 by Jay Quentin

Sweet! - I was running TomSteady and had to get rid of it because it was bogging down both my work and home computers. This is nice, lite, sounds great and it works in Winamp3 with the right plugin :) - December 8, 2003 by Connor Garvey

Make it "more perfect" - I works ok, but still i notice that it can't perfectly recognize the difference between the sound i wanna hear and the noise annoying me. Peter, just keep up good work and try to make it more perfect - September 15, 2003 by m. fajri rahman

Great potential, but buggy - I've been using TomSteady for AGC, but then decided to try this one sice it uses the RMS method, rather than max amplitude. It realiably "hangs" when I change the value for "Position in RMS window", while a song is playing. Not a good impression... - June 13, 2003 by Bernhard Kohlhaas

Perfect - I tried all the others, and i'm using this one. That says it all. Works like a dream. - January 9, 2003 by Phlux Phlux

For listening to dictation files is cool - I use it for listening to MP3 coming from dictation, and it perfoms very well. Little impacts on the mike do not damage your ear when you are listening to with earphones. - December 12, 2002 by Juan Sanchez

Wonderful! - Just what I needed! I downloaded an alarm program and needed a volume stabilizer and this is PERFECT! - November 28, 2002 by Elanor Matheson

neat work - its jus too good. this was my first dsp and maan... it was jus booom - October 1, 2002 by Venkatasubramanian Muralidhara

Why isn't it a standard feature? - I just registered to say that anytime I download Winamp, I download this as well. Why not save my time and have it as an integral feature, Winamp people? Anyway, nice work. This is the only plugin I ever go straight for and bother to remember the name of. - August 28, 2002 by Bill Hayes

Not Too Shabby!! - Great idea! Needs more devlopment - July 20, 2002 by genevieve poirier

Flawless victory! - This program ownz! Sofar the best volume equalizer ever for winamp. And to everyone who complains about the bad sound quality, pops and clicks; get better hardware and/or better mp3's! This plugin always works for me. - May 13, 2002 by dario v

The Best! - Hi, man this plugin is surely the best. why don't they build this in? - March 25, 2002 by Rafas ruijgman

Excellent Compressor - I run this one both in the car and on my PC Hi-Fi with excellent results - I wish I could plug it in to my other audio software. It really is pro-quality and is very configurable. - March 17, 2002 by Jim C

The One and Only - Don't listen to those saying this isn't a good plugin, cause it's excellent. Fade in and fade out works perfectly, and with a good configuration makes volume management almost perfect. Download the plugin! Nevermind those nerds that think they are listening a Martin Logan or a Krell instead of a Winamp! To author: Keep the good job! - February 7, 2002 by Lullabyer .

Reliable...when's the update? - I've been running this for over a year on my LPFM station, mainly to keep the level up to by 70's BE broadcast limiter. It's been 100% reliable and configurable. Works great with the new version of Sqrsoft Crossfading (works after crossfading). There are some features I'd love to see - maybe multiband compression, selectable pre-emphasis (50uS for those of us outside the US) and pre-emphasised limiting? Maybe that's too much to ask...but I look forward to seeing what the update has to offer. - January 25, 2002 by a r joll

What's going on here? - I use the plugin on both my laptop and my desktop,my ears are OK and, once setup this plugin sounds absolutly great. O.K. It dosn't have any flashing lights or virtual meters bouncing around to entertain you BUT on my computers it is without doubt the best plugin I have ever used for this task - broadcast quality. Play with it a bit more B4 you mis-judg it ! - January 18, 2002 by Steve West

work place dream - yesssssssssssssssssssss. No more will my work mates fall over as winamp moves from John Williams to Oscar Peterson. - January 9, 2002 by Jefah Guess

Works okay - It works alright, but leaves someting to be desired. Music Sound better with it off, and I'm not too lazy to switch the volume on my own, thank you. - December 18, 2001 by Itysir Wedaman

Great Plugin - No more turning up those songs that were recorded a little too softly, or turning down the blaring ones. This plugin will even them all out for you. Works perfectly on default settings, especially when used with a crossfading output plugin. No more weird volume drops at the end of a song! - December 2, 2001 by Chris Heald

Great performance and low CPU usage - RockSteady is the best sound level adjuster that I have found. Others that I have tried adjust the sound level too late so that quick changes in the volume of songs result in huge mistakes by the plugins or they produce annoying hiss or high pitched whine. I do not have this problem with RockSteady. Also, the sound quality of the output is great. I have read other reviews that state the the plugin produces pops and hiss and I would say that since I have not had that problem with RockSteady, the problem experienced by those users must have been due to bad recording quality of their MP3's which, when amplified, sounded horrible. Also, others have said that the program does not work like a compressor should work. That is because it is not a compressor at all. For a real time sound level adjuster, RockSteady does its job extremely effectively (great results) and efficiently (low CPU usage.) I never use Winamp without it. - October 9, 2001 by Connor Garvey

great for recording - I think this plugin does its job very well for the CPU time it uses. Its invaluable when recording MP3 onto other media although it isnt really useful for normal listening. for those who find it ruins fade outs and fade ins: set amp gain time higher. at least 5000ms. - August 27, 2001 by Simon Psymon

GREAT!! +10 stars - Very , very steable , very cool sound system compression plus it doesnt uses a lot of CPU like other does, gets the sound of my subwoofer like ive never heard before keep da good work!! - August 26, 2001 by Sebastin Holzapfel

Poor - The plugin does its job very very basically. It reduces sound quiailty tremondously, only an idiot wouldn't notice the pops and clicks going through all their mp3 files now as the plugin adjusts the volume, forget any tracks that fade out at the end because this will kill them....it tries to bring the fade out to the same volume and of course it sounds terrible....a good idea, but not a compressor at all....just something which brings to volume to a certain db level....badly. Still on the search for a succesful plugin to do this job...... - August 26, 2001 by Danny Shepherd

Not bad - Not bad. However, I think AudioStocker is better than this. - July 27, 2001 by Ungermann Bass

Awesome Plug-in! - Love the plug-in! This is definately a must have for all WinAmp users. - July 2, 2001 by Mr. Checkers

Excellent - This plugin works great. I have used it for a year and have had no problems. It makes listening to MP3s much more enjoyable. - June 26, 2001 by Shaun Holdaway

Awsome stuff - This plug in is always the first plug-in I install when it comes time to reload winamp....never gives the blues, I always get to "rock" out. and I get power increase to the sub-woofer. To top it off it is very stable compared to some apps in winamp. Just can't beat this plug. - June 19, 2001 by michael walker

Great plugin, i've used it since 1999 without any problem's. - I use this plugin for my shoutcast stream, and it deliver's excellent sound quality. It runs constantly without error, and it offer's great control over the audio chain. I think it's the best and most useful audio plugin for winamp. - June 5, 2001 by Chris Fields

Franky A. - Just heaven in DSP, won't ever unistall it ( unless there's an update, of course).Keep up the good work - May 21, 2001 by Francisco Aguilar

The best level compression plugin - Once downloaded and installed the plugin this plugin delivers a great functionality and perfect control over lots of signal`s parameters allowing you to make your destinctive sound. - April 2, 2001 by Kyril Golovatchev
