CD Reader - Featured Plugin.

Staff review

Play CDs through the EQ, AVS, SHOUTcast, etc. Very nice.

Answers one of our FAQs: Why doesn't the EQ work when I play a CD. And the ability to play a CD through AVS and SHOUTcast makes this plug-in crucial!

No flaw install - Does what it is supposed to, easy and fast. Excellent plug in! - January 29, 2005 by Brady Waugh

??? Turning off in_cdda.dll ??? - Plenty has been said about how good this plugin is and particularly as I have just discovered when used together with MP3 Output Plugin by Chun-Yu Shei But has any one else noticed that when you "turn" in_cdda.dll "off" as required by renaming it the devices: 1. The CD drive no longer appears under the "Play" menu when you right click the Winamp's main window; and 2. "Devices" no longer appear in the Winamp Media Library. Can anybody confirm or explain? new cddb address - just post this address to make online cd look up's work.....freedb.freedb.org:8880 the only reason i dident give it 5 stars is the address in cddb dident work.......but great plug in - April 23, 2003 by paul b

download this as soon as pos - This is the best plugin for winamp 2. whatever. It will allow vis and plugins to work with cd's. Excellent work Vladimir. - March 10, 2003 by James Field

Don't live without it! - Play CDs through the EQ, AVS, SHOUTcast, etc. and also search for titles in CDDB database and enable you to edit and keep your CDs and songs titles. Very good. - October 19, 2002 by Sam Bar

Makes jitter with EQ on - This plug-in does not like my system. It makes noticeable jitter at high notes like trumpet (Does anybody know what the time it is? by Chicago) when the EQ is ON. It does not jitter when EQ is OFF. I tried v1.95 on Windows XP Home in Dell 2300 (a cheap on-board soundtip called SoundMax). - October 7, 2002 by Jun Yamaya

Just Great ... but get the last one - The version availaible here is the 1.71, which doesn't work on my PC. The last one is available here : http://www.url.ru/~copah/ (I got the 1.95). - September 25, 2002 by Etienne Gauthier

Great! - Love it! No more messed up volume. - September 24, 2002 by Eric Scouler

so good to listen cd with all Winamp Plugins !!!!!! - very usefull and practice, able to use EQ and DSPs such as SQRSOFT Crossfading, etc, on listening CD's with Winamp. Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - July 26, 2002 by Antoine thomas

low quality - this plugin generates REALLY REALLY bad audio. jitter is extremely obvious. just use the original winamp cd plugin. - July 6, 2002 by ploppy plop

An excellent plugin. Here's how you get it to work. - This plugin is a must for anyone who has Winamp and a CD player and would like to enjoy EQ and DSP enhanced sound without having to rip tracks from the CD. However, one major problem with this plugin is that it's a bit confusing to get to work properly when you install it. Here's a step-by-step guide to get it to work right, because I think this review page needs SOMEONE to say how to get it to work. 1. Install the plugin (duh!) 2. There is a file in your plugin directory called in_cdda.dll. This is the file for the default winamp CD player, the plugin won't work properly with it installed, so you must rename this file to in_cdda.dll.off so winamp will no longer recognize it. 3. Go into your preferences and access the plugin configurations. Turn on Internet CDDB and local CDDB. Change the CDDB server url from www.cddb.com to us.cddb.com. That's the server the original cd player uses. 4. Now play a CD. If the song title doesn't come up immediately don't panic. The cd titles should come up in a few moments. Enjoy! :) - June 13, 2002 by Jason Hill

I love this man - This program has been the only plugin that comes mandatory anytime i install winamp.. I hook up my sound card to my 300 watt Amp and then out to some killer 200 wattage speakers and I need this plug for the EQ to funtion with my CDs so my hook up can really kick Arse... - June 12, 2002 by Kofi Barnes

Neccessary Plug-In for musicians - If you have swapped out your original sound card for a multitrack card that has no input for a CD player, like the M-Audio Delta series, you will need this plug-in to get your CD player(s) to work again....And work it does !!! With outstanding results!! - May 27, 2002 by Dean Giamette

Kicks Ass - Yeee... it enables to read info from local cdplayer.ini file so I have all my cd titles in Winamp! - May 22, 2002 by Mario K

MUST DOWNLOAD THIS - Any person who has Winamp should download this, I personally think it should come with the program. Just put a CD in and you can use dsp plugins and visulizations. Give this man a medal. Probably the best plug in I have ever seen. - May 15, 2002 by james field

Unbelievable!!! - First of all go to the author?s homepage and download the latest version of this plug-in. Second this is hand?s down the best plug-in I have ever downloaded. I can?t say enough good things about. True, you have to play with the configuration a bit, but when you get it right it?s fantastic!! If this plug-in doesn?t work for you time to get a new computer!! - April 22, 2002 by Carlos Jackson

VERY useful - For some reason, the normal CD player in Winamp crashes my system every so often, so this is a VERY nice alternative. A few notes on getting it to work: Visit the author's homepage and grab the latest version, rename your in_cdda.dll to in_cdda.dll.off, and set the CDDB server to us.freedb.org (or some other working CDDB server, the default one doesn't seem to work). VERY nice plugin! - April 10, 2002 by Bredon Clay

Very good but some bugs - The plugin is super but it wont work with the cddb file id. but who need the names on the tracks when u can use avs presets and stuff like that ;) - March 29, 2002 by King snake

Best Input plugin there is... - Now, there may be a lot of complaints because you have to have your CD's clean, and you have to be a power user and fiddle with the settings until it's buffered right, but after you get it figured... You won't use anything else. In fact, I don't even install the default in_cdda.dll anymore, that's how good it is. Also, it allows you to do anything you could do with Wav/Mp3's with it. Great plug in. - March 24, 2002 by Kai Tremeche

everybody should get this - Download now! I've been searching forever for something that would do this. My EQ and AVS work with cds now. Definitely deserving 5 stars. - February 25, 2002 by Andrew Ensley

Excellent (evil Mr Burns hand thingy) - The "pile of junk", as claimed by a certain computer illiterate with a PC trapped in the 80's, is a wonderful piece of software. It?s fast, stable, simple, and useful Overall in quality I would rate it up there amongst the likes of Winamp itself. To those who want to know what it does and/or what benefits it has, download it and view the README file. I found this plugin very useful when I used to record music to Minidisc (MD) via an optical TOSLINK on my soundcard. (I don?t know if this will work with the Sony USB to MD thingy tho; never tried it). By ripping the audio data and sending it through your PC bus instead of the flimsy audio out wire, the MD records a better quality [digital] signal. The only complaint I can think of is the inability to use both CD Reader and the Nullsoft CD/Linein plugin (visualization for linein). It?s a trivial matter, though. Just move the Nullsoft plugin (C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\in_cdda.dll) out of your plugins folder before you use CD Reader, and vice versa. - February 1, 2002 by Preliude Type R

Good...But not perfect - The plug-in works fine on me, and I enjoy it very much, except for the reason that the cddb never worked...it completely ruined the cd wav file id... - January 31, 2002 by Vasco Ferraz de Oliveira

worst english coment I ever seen - Your Plugin is great, you should insert a switch wich can select between your plugin and "in_cdda.dll". Now I can use Winamp as CD-2-MP3 converter too, thank you very much. The following comment is not worth to shown with this plugin at this page. > Jason Schutze gave it "0/5 stars" > don't werck posted on September 14, 2001 @ 10:49 PM > this thing dus not werck with usb pleyers or with a > compaq dvdRom or with a philups cdrwRom This men should learn english at first. - January 26, 2002 by Borg Number_One

it works - This is a nice plugin once you change the winamp In_cdda.dll name to some other name so the plugin can work. - January 23, 2002 by bryon poe

really good - it worcks for me and it always will i dont think people can see new comps arnt the best ares is 1 year old 1300 mhz and it runs fine on this sorta old comp mabe you need something you dont have to run it ??? i dont know y it does not work for your comp ?? - January 22, 2002 by Daniel Sparks

Junk! - This is the biggest pile of junk I've ever downloaded! All this plug-in did was make my CDs skip. I downloaded the so called "update" from the author's homepage and it didn't fix anything. Save your time people. This one isn't worth the trouble. - January 11, 2002 by Vern Anderson

Three Shazams - Great plugin, really expands the capability of CD output, my main complaint though is that it renders the Play Audio CD option in Winamp useless. - December 29, 2001 by Kurt Preston

Nice idea... - ...but I'm not entirely convinced it provides the quality improvements it claims to. I am playing it through a rather nice hi-fi setup, and it still doesn't beat even a relatively cheap CD player plugged into the same amp and speaker combo (it's a separate pre/power amp with biwired speakers, just to give you an idea). Oh, and another little problem: I may be being thick here, but I can't see a way to load audio data off an audio CD that has a data track on it. That said, this is still an impressive plugin with plenty of uses: being able to use AVS has got to be the "gadgetiest". But to have an impressive DAC in a - December 29, 2001 by Andrew Kurowski

Great Plug-in - This plug in is great. You can rip CDs into any format that winamp has an output plug-in for. Plus, you can use DSP plug-ins and any other one. Plus, it makes great use of my other CD-Rom, which doesn't have an audio cable. - December 16, 2001 by Jose Casillas

A buggy yet classic plug-in - The 1.91 version has some buggy problems after finishing running through one audio CD. At the end of the last track, there will be an error that keeps popping up. - December 13, 2001 by Darryl Lin

wOOt - Digital Rulez no more analog Shit =D - November 26, 2001 by David Hsieh

It would be great if... - I would probably be saying good things about this P/in if it wasnt for the fact that im stuck with Windows ME, which it doesn't support. #@$%&**^!!!!! - November 20, 2001 by Ian Soule

CD Reader Rocks!!! - Vladimir Kopjov did an excellent job with the Cd Reader Plugin! Now I can actually listen to my audio cds within Winamp instead of having to use another program. Note: He has released a newer version than the one posted on winamp.com - October 29, 2001 by Josiah Draper

Its all good. . . but. - Congrats to you for this plugin but after a good play around changing settings here and there. I couldnt get it to play CDs properly after a few seconds of play it would start jittering and skipping and reversing and stuff. Other than that, its what ive been looking for, for a long time considering I broke my cd to soundcard lead any suggestions? - October 23, 2001 by Steve Bailey

ZE plug-in ! - If you had to have only one plug-in for winamp, that would be the one. Great job. - October 10, 2001 by Vincent Garnier

Fukin Brilliant - good Show Old Chap - October 9, 2001 by Mike Da-Man

best - finally something that plays audio CDs correctly, not thru the mostly bad D/A transformer in the CD-ROM... also finally working with visualization plugins... great idea Vladimir, good work... - October 7, 2001 by Josef Novak

EQ Works!!! - I've been wishing for some time that I could use EQ on CDs. My wish has been granted with this plugin. One note though. The author hasn't been keeping this Winamp page up to date. His home page has a more recent version (v1.91 on his site, v1.71 here at the time I am writing this - 2001-10-04) - October 4, 2001 by Sonny Savage

...got titles? - Finally found something that will read CD titles. If you use the CD player on another program and have used CDDB to get disc info, this will come in handy with Winamp. This plugin basically makes Winamp think the CD is an MP3 because it will also go through the EQ, plugins, visualizations, etc. Nice Work!! - October 4, 2001 by Jason AUSTiN

CD Reader actually works! - What I look for in plug-ins and programs is those that do what they say, and work to boot. CR Reader does what it says. - October 2, 2001 by Scott Patri

Great, but... - I am removing one star from this fabulous plug-in for one BIG gripe I have with this (and all CD players), no multi-artist support! I hate the word various! - October 2, 2001 by Aidan Walsh

Stuff worx with audio CD's now - It fixed some of the problem that I have play audio CD's READ THE README FILE : you have to rename a .dll file or it won't work - September 29, 2001 by Loopy Loopy

great... no need for any CD audio cable - This plugin does the trick... I don't even need the cable, and the CD out quality is almost skip proof... even if the CD has lots of scratches on it's surface. - September 20, 2001 by Christian Xu

BAD!!! - This plug in is bad!real bad!!! after i installed it, mwhen i play audio cd, it became very jerky!!! i have to reinstall my winamp :( BAD! BAD!!!!! - September 19, 2001 by max ng

Could be darned usefull... - I've wondered why WinAmp didn't just SHIP with capability like this! I've got a standard-issue IDE CDROM drive on a 166, and it works fine for me with very little noticeable slowdown. I DO wish the author had made it more obvious that you have to RENAME WINAMP'S NATIVE CD-READING DLL for it to work. Check the ReadMe on this one. - September 19, 2001 by Archai Valkryn

cddb - this plugin improves winamp's cd playing ability, but i've noticed that the cddb fails. I solved this by changing www.cddb.com to us.cddb.com. - September 4, 2001 by brandon colaprete

A must-have for listening to CD's - Without this plug-in, sound from the CD will not be EQ'd by WinAmp's equalizer. With the plug-in, you can control the input level and equalization like other audio formats. It's important enough that it forces the question of why Winamp doesn't have this capability by default! - August 31, 2001 by Wes Macaulay

GOOD!! - Many people will say why da fu** ill download this if ive have already the CD reading system on, now here is da answer the CD-Line In system of windows is a POS because it doesnt gets the sound into the EQ so it sound without the EQ that you have on!! - August 26, 2001 by Sebastin Holzapfel

Not sure why?!?! - Ver 171 works great, but the latest version 191 will not work. I am running on Win NT4.0 and w/ v191 I get an error everytime I try to play anything from the CD. - August 20, 2001 by John Wizorek

Revoking previous verdict -- Upgraded to 5 star rating - Now after seeing so many success' here in the reviews, I just had to re-review the plugin. I went and downloaded 1.83 (1.91 was pulled out because of speed problems) and it seems to keep up with speed very well. Plus the CDDB support is much more seamless than the stock CD plugin that comes with Winamp. Please note that I made both my old review and new review using the plugin on the same computer. The EQ now works the way I expect it (it still worked before but not as well, just little jumps in the EQ with the old one). - August 15, 2001 by Robert Pendell

Go straight to MP3, WAV, or WMA! - With this plugin, you can go straight from CD to any format you have an output plugin for (mp3, wma, wav, etc.) Except for audio editing and CD burning, I need no other audio software now! - August 12, 2001 by James Athey

CD Reader - works fine for me - August 9, 2001 by Ryan Kruzan

sweet - 'nuff sed. - August 3, 2001 by David Cheung

BLAH! - All i can say to all you peeps that have trouble with this plugin is, LEARN HOW TO USE A COMPUTER! Sheesh, ya pay all that cash for a computer, learn how to use it! - August 2, 2001 by Brendan Pike

Superb - Wonderful plugin - I've thrown away all my analogue connection cables! - July 29, 2001 by James Cox

...But go to the Vladimir's homepage for 1.91 - Great plugin! But get version 1.91 at the author's website, http://www.url.ru/~copah/Index.htm. A big improvement over Version 1.71 currently at WinAmp. - July 22, 2001 by Bob DeYoung

EXCELLENT - This plugin is excellent, great idea. Very usefull. You can even equalize the CDs sound, fantastic!!!! The people who have a bad opinion about this should be more "perspicaz" and less stupid! Congratulations for the great plugin. - July 17, 2001 by Louis Stallinger

CD Reader YEAH - It makes your cds as functional and fun as mp3s. I get CD Reader just for the Visualizations. It works and takes 2 seconds to download. - July 3, 2001 by brad dittmer

Good, but.... - Audio playback on the old computer at work now works!! I didn't have to beg for an audio connector or sneak open the case at night....BUT CDDB info functionality was disabled via our Intranet. It was working before, and worked again when I reinstalled Winamp. Tried duplicating CDDB server info from original Winamp settings with no luck. I LIKE this plug in, but need CDDB functionality. - July 1, 2001 by Andy Hendin

Simply love it - I'm using the version 1.71 and it's working perfectly fine!!! tried using the newer version but it kept giving me problems...mebbe you shld try republishing the previous version? - June 23, 2001 by Wen Yang Lee

Sweet - Stupid People...Its not your computer speed that counts, this plugin works perfect if you have a working cd rom drive, ibm completely sucks, no wonder it doesnt work, matt.. get yourself a Real computer - June 21, 2001 by Dale Christenson

it rockz! - i really mean it that way! It?s much louder and better quality than through the CD-Audio-line! - June 19, 2001 by Hendrik May

a very substantial change for the better - I laughed after I installed this, which took about 15 seconds. The sound from the CD's was soo much better it was funny. I am one happy listener. Thank you very much, Mr. Kopjov. - June 11, 2001 by Sharrow Tzant

Top dog - This is superb. Superior quality playback for *supported* hardware. So if your el cheapo CD-ROM can't perform DAO quickly enough, it won't work, doesn't matter how fast/new your computer is. Had it working for years on an AMD K6-III 450MHz with a Toshiba 48x CD-ROM drive. Would prefer if it used something other than CDPLAYER.INI to store tracklists, as it has problems when it exceeds 64k. Apart from the, ace! - June 4, 2001 by Matthew Norrie

Saves Me Money On Replacement Audio Cables - posted on April 1, 2001 @ 8:10 AM My ZIPCD650 Was becoming annoying because i needed a new line lead as its one was weak but i needed two leads one for it and one for something else but this plug skips the sound entirely and goes through the ripping process and sends the data as pcm through the specific usb port on hy Hp Pavilion 6506. Very Handy Great for the equalizer without it winamp is no better than any other player. i forgot to select 5 stars and had internet problems - just as well i could adjust it later It forgot to input my name on the page - must be a php/cgi/active server pages glitch i hope the updates will arrive on this page soon. - May 29, 2001 by Steve Beer

No more line noise! - This is an essential plugin! The audio out on most CD-Rom drives is terrible. My DVD's audio out has pops and the audio out from the burner hisses even when not playing so I disconected both cables. Till I found this I had to use WMP7 (Yuck!) because it plays CDs digitally. Now with CD Reader I can play my CDs in high fidelity with WinAmp and use EQ, Vis etc. Instillation is more complex than normal. Read the readme.txt and make sure you configure it correctly and welcome to quality CD playback through winamp at last. - May 23, 2001 by Ceboy Naught

Strange hissing - I have this installed, but when I go to play an audio CD, in most tracks, after 15 seconds, it sends white noise through the signal, but you can hear the song playing. It can be fixed by moving the slider anywhere. I can see the drive, it flashes the busy light in regular intervals, then stops for 1/2 second, then as soon as it comes back, hiss. I know it's not my equipment because the stock Windows CD Player plays it fine. - May 22, 2001 by Nathan Widmyer

IT SUCKS - it doesnt work on my computer.....and its a brand new ibm 800 mhz computer!! whats up with that - May 17, 2001 by Matt Brown

STUDENT - WELL! THIS IS A MUST HAVE PLUG - May 12, 2001 by tord larsson

darn$%&^%$% - all it does to me is mute my sound and read the cd really quick and write .wav files to my C: drive - May 10, 2001 by Browning Keister

Just as good as CDFS! - Wow, in a world of Digital Audio Extraction, why are our CD-ROM's still playing our Audio CD's using the fairly crappy DAC's contained within the unit, and not many auctually use Digital Audio Out. In steps CDExtractor, the best CD player out there, even edging out Windows Media Player 7's digital playback. Not only that, but, you can even extract your CD's to WAV using the disk writer. Now your CD's can have all the features compressed audio does, EQ, VIS and Shoutcast. Get it, or stick with your crappy CD playback. - April 19, 2001 by Jay Moore

Great plugin - How can i explain how good it is? A really great plugin this is. & I hope the bug-fixed next version to come out soon. :) I can say: u'll never think your effort to download this plugin useless. Just get this plugin. - April 4, 2001 by Hunki Chang

MAY I ADD another " 5 " STARS * * * * * !! - THIS IS A FACT. I'VE BEEN FIGHTING AGAINST MY CD-READER, FOR 3 YEARS!!! AN HITACHI CD-ROM DEVICE, WITH A TRIDENT SOUND CARD.SINCE THEN,!NEVER EVER! I COULD HEAR A REGULAR MUSIC CD THROUGH IT, ALTHOUGH THE AMMOUNTS OF MAILS,TRIDENT co., SENT ME, TRYING TO FIX THE BUG.. NOTHING WORKED 'TIL 5 MINUTES AGO,WHEN I RUN "CD READER" PLUG IN, AND... MAGICALLY!!!! THE BEAUTIFUL SOUND OF PAVAROTTI CAME OUT OF THE SPEAKERS !!!! I WILL ADD THIS REVIEW TO MY HOMEPAGE, AND PROMOTE THIS PLUG IN AND WINAMP. - April 2, 2001 by german codina

Highly Recommended! - Love this plugin and can't live without it! - April 1, 2001 by John Jackson

what a no brainer - This Plug in is a must have and should be already packaged in the winamp download, but since it aint... [click] and get it now! - April 1, 2001 by Jeffery Cockerham

Useful - Wow, what a great plugin! Now I don't need to convert those cda files to mp3 files in order to let the EQ or AVS work. - March 30, 2001 by Alvin Poh

Indispensable - This plug-in is a must-have. Be sure to grab the latest version from the author's homepage. - March 29, 2001 by Vincent Gambier

great! - i love this plugin. this is a must-have - March 29, 2001 by s 1138

Life-saver! - I had to do something for a project, and I couldn't record the song off the CD. Thanks to this plug-in, I got the job done! - March 29, 2001 by Picaune News
